UpBusiness is a Toptal alternative for businesses that need a whole team behind the work rather than one vetted individual. You post your project once and get three partner companies matched to it, each of which has been through a five-step onboarding where our team checks its registration documents, its founder's identity and three real client projects. Buyers pay no subscription and no commission, and buyers and companies can be anywhere in the world.

If you only have a minute

  • Toptal vets individual freelancers. UpBusiness vets companies, so you hire a team with one contract and one accountable owner.
  • Toptal charges a $79 monthly subscription once you proceed with talent matching. UpBusiness charges buyers nothing.
  • Every UpBusiness partner company needs a TrustScore of 70 or more out of 100, built from documents and three client projects with evidence.
  • The matching compares your budget with each company's project sizes, so the three companies you get fit what you plan to spend.

Why Businesses Look for a Toptal Alternative

Toptal describes itself as an exclusive network of the top 3% of freelance talent, covering developers, designers, marketers, consultants and project managers[1]. Its model is about placing strong individuals, and it charges a flat $79 monthly subscription if you decide to proceed with talent matching[2]. Its pricing page explains the benefits and the trial but doesn't list hourly rates, so you find out the cost per hire later in the process[3].

That works when you need one excellent person to slot into a team you already run. It's a harder fit when you don't have that team, and need someone to own the design, build, testing and delivery together.

A Vetted Individual or a Vetted Team?

Hiring one top freelancer is a great answer when you already have a product manager, a delivery process and the rest of the team in place, and you need one more strong pair of hands. You'll manage the work, and the freelancer plugs into it.

A vetted freelancer vs a verified company: who owns the result, skills covered, cover when someone is away, maintenance after launch, contract and invoice

A company is the better answer when you need the whole result delivered rather than an extra contributor. A partner company brings design, development, testing and project management under one contract, covers when someone is ill or leaves, keeps the knowledge in a team rather than one head, and is still there to maintain the product next year. You're vetting the organisation that will be responsible for the outcome, which is exactly what UpBusiness checks.

If you're weighing up how to structure an outside team, our guide to dedicated developers vs project-based teams walks through both models.

What You Actually Pay With Each Model

The two routes are priced in different ways, which is why comparing them on an hourly rate alone doesn't work very well.

Cost lineHiring individuals through ToptalHiring a company through UpBusiness
Platform fee$79 a month once you proceed with matchingNone
How the work is pricedA rate per person, billed hourly, part-time or full-timeA fixed price per phase, or a monthly team rate
A four-role teamFour separate engagementsOne contract
Project managementYours, or a fifth hireUsually included in the quote
Cover when someone leavesYou start a new searchThe company replaces them

Toptal doesn't publish its hourly rates, and estimates you'll find online vary widely, so the honest comparison is to ask both for a quote on the same scope. When you do, put your own management time into the Toptal column. Running four strong individuals well is close to a full-time job, and if nobody on your side has that time, you'll either pay for a project manager or pay later in missed deadlines.

There's a fair point on Toptal's side, too. A company quote includes margin for its overheads, and if you already have a product manager and a working delivery process, adding individuals can be the cheaper route.

How UpBusiness Vets a Company

Every partner company completes five onboarding steps, and our team reviews each one by hand before the profile goes live.

UpBusiness partner onboarding in five steps: company information, business verification, founder verification, expertise, and three client projects with evidence

First, the basics that decide fit: services, industries, typical client size, minimum project size and rate, location, website and office photos. Then the company itself, through its incorporation certificate and tax registration, with years in business taken from those documents. Then the person running it, through their identity, email, phone and LinkedIn. Awards and certifications need a link or document to count.

Finally, three client projects, each with the client's name, the services delivered, the size, the dates, a description, evidence of the work and proof of the engagement. If the company shares the client's email, we contact the client to confirm. The result is a TrustScore out of 100, with up to 33 points for business verification and up to 27 for client details, and only companies scoring 70 or more are listed. Optional paid plans can raise a listed company's position in the default "Recommended" order, but they can't replace any of these checks.

When Toptal Is the Better Choice

Toptal makes sense when you already have the team and the process, and you're filling a specific gap. A startup with a CTO and two engineers that needs a senior iOS developer for six months is a good example, and so is an enterprise team that wants a specialist in one technology for a defined piece of work.

Its trial period is a real advantage. Toptal says you won't be charged if a new hire doesn't meet your expectations during the trial, and you keep the work that was done. UpBusiness doesn't run a trial, because you contract with the company directly. The closest equivalent is a short paid discovery phase, which we'd recommend for any project of a few months or more.

How to Run a Paid Discovery Phase

Discovery is a small, fixed-price piece of work, usually two to four weeks, that comes before the main build. You pay the company to work out what should be built, and you get something useful whether or not you continue with them.

  • A written scope with the features in and out of the first release.
  • Wireframes or a clickable prototype of the main screens.
  • A technical plan covering the stack, hosting, integrations and the risks they can see.
  • A detailed estimate and timeline for the build, broken into milestones.

It's the best trial you can run with a company, because you see how it thinks, communicates and handles your questions on real work. If the fit is wrong, you leave with documents another team can quote against. Make sure the contract says you own them.

Managing a Team in Another Time Zone

A lot of companies on UpBusiness are in India, and buyers in the US, UK, Europe and Australia look at Indian teams for the same reason they look at Toptal: strong engineers at a lower cost than hiring locally. The difference is that the company handles the team, so what you manage is the relationship.

  • Agree a few hours of daily overlap and a fixed time for a weekly demo where you see working software, not slides.
  • Ask for one named project manager who is your contact for everything, so you aren't chasing individual developers.
  • Keep the code repository, cloud accounts and project board in your company's name from the first day, and give the team access to them.
  • Write down which country's law governs the contract. Larger Indian companies usually accept the client's jurisdiction if you ask.
  • Ask for invoices in your own currency, and check whether GST has been added. Exported services from India can usually be billed without it.

With those in place, a team on the other side of the world can be easier to work with than a local contractor, because the work moves forward while you sleep and is waiting for review in the morning.

How Hiring Works

  1. Post your requirement with the service, a rough budget, the timeline and any specifics, such as a tech stack or the time zone you need overlap with.
  2. Get three partner companies matched on their services, industries, project size and verified track record.
  3. Shortlist and compare them side by side on TrustScore, reviews, industry experience, commercial fit, portfolio and responsiveness, then contact them directly.

A clear brief makes the matches better, and our software project brief template shows what to include. When the proposals arrive, our guide on how to compare software development proposals helps you weigh them fairly.

Other Toptal Alternatives by What You Need

If what you liked about Toptal was the vetting, but you need a whole team, a verified company is the closest swap. If you mainly want lower rates for well-defined tasks and you're happy to manage people yourself, an open freelance marketplace works, and our Upwork alternative guide compares that route with hiring a company. For packaged, fixed-price creative tasks, the Fiverr alternative guide is the better read. If you're comparing directories of agencies instead, our Clutch alternative and GoodFirms alternative guides explain how their rankings work and what UpBusiness checks differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you need a team that owns the whole project rather than one freelancer, UpBusiness is built as a Toptal alternative. You post one brief and get three matched partner companies, each of which passed a five-step onboarding covering registration documents, founder identity and three client projects with evidence, with a TrustScore of 70 or more. There's no subscription for buyers and no commission.
UpBusiness is a site like Toptal for hiring vetted talent, but it vets companies instead of individuals. It covers software, AI, marketing, design and consulting, and matches your brief to three verified partner companies that you can shortlist and compare side by side. It's free for buyers anywhere in the world, with no subscription and no commission on the project.
According to Toptal's FAQ, there's a flat $79 monthly subscription that's charged if you decide to proceed with talent matching, and you can cancel at any time. Its pricing page doesn't list hourly rates, which depend on the talent you hire. UpBusiness has no subscription or fee for buyers, and partner companies set out their minimum project size and rate.
Hire an individual when you already run the team and the process and need one more strong contributor. Hire a company when you need the result delivered end to end, because a company brings design, development, testing and project management under one contract, covers absences and stays around to maintain the work. UpBusiness lists only verified companies for that kind of hire.
Yes. Posting a requirement, getting three matched partner companies, browsing, shortlisting, comparing and contacting companies are all free for buyers, with no subscription. There's no commission on the project either, so the price you agree with the partner company is the price you pay. UpBusiness earns from optional paid plans that partner companies can choose.
Our team reviews five onboarding steps by hand: company information, incorporation and tax documents, founder identity, expertise backed by proof, and three client projects with evidence, which we can confirm with the client by email. The result is a TrustScore out of 100, with up to 33 points for business verification and up to 27 for client details. Only companies scoring 70 or more are listed.
No. Buyers pay nothing to post a requirement, receive three matched partner companies, browse categories or use the shortlist. There's no subscription, no deposit and no commission on the project. You agree the price and payment terms directly with the company you choose, and we'd recommend milestone payments tied to work you've reviewed and accepted.
Often, yes. Some partner companies offer dedicated developers on a monthly basis as well as full project teams, and you can say which you need in your requirement. The difference from a freelance network is that the company handles cover, replacement and management, so if your developer leaves, finding the next one is its problem rather than yours.
There's no platform trial, because you contract with the company directly. The best substitute is a short paid discovery phase of two to four weeks, where the company produces a scope, wireframes, a technical plan and a detailed estimate. You see how it works on a real task, and you keep the documents even if you choose another company.
